According to the World Health Organization, back pain is the “leading cause of disability worldwide.” That’s the bad news. However, here’s the very good news: it’s a condition that can be treated through rehabilitation in many forms and modalities, including prescriptive yoga—YAY!!

Whether you are a teacher or a student, a seasoned practitioner or new to yoga, this workshop will offer accessible movement recommendations and reinforce tips and tools to take home to incorporate into your daily patterns and practices to manage spinal pain, or attempt to avoid it entirely.

Together, we will explore foundational spinal health from the ground up to better understand its power and pitfalls, then learn to move our bodies strategically and intelligently— blending traditional yoga asana, breath, and meditation techniques with PT and functional movement exercises. We will also offer a brief presentation of the spine’s  anatomy and address specific conditions such as sciatica, disc herniation, scoliosis, stenosis, spondylosis, and muscle spasms, focusing on how to continue a meaningful and whole-body yoga practice to support your spine.

Workshop registration includes a take-home color handout.

 SLIDING SCALE

$40 | $ 65 | $80

CE credits offered to yoga teachers.

A LITTLE ABOUT US

When Sarah Webb was ten, she was diagnosed with scoliosis, and for the next ten years, she wore a back brace to "correct" the condition. It didn't work. In her thirties, at her physician's suggestion, she walked into her first yoga class, and, from both somatic and professional perspectives, the practice of asana has been transformative — Sarah learned how to manage her pain, build strength in her body, and heal. Since 2008, Sarah has taught classes, workshops, and teacher trainings in the greater Rochester area. She has been honored to assist Elise Miller, a pioneer in the study of Yoga for Scoliosis.

Sara Basher has been practicing yoga since 2015. Her yoga journey went from fitness-driven vinyasa to tuning into her sore body and stretching every muscle before getting up to stand. She has been navigating her own tight traps, sore shoulders, and stiff neck for the past few years and often hits her mat to address any or all of those areas. Sara has been teaching yoga since 2021 and holds a 500hr yoga teaching training certification. She is also a trained professional in assisted stretching, helping other people work through muscle tightness and pain.

Leslee Schenk Trzcinski now manages - and directly teaches from - her extensive spine diagnoses. Decades of physical exertion as an elite and professional athlete, combined with age and a little genetics, culminated to this new era in her physical journey. As a full-time yoga teacher of classes, workshops, and teacher trainings for over 15 years, she recently staved off back surgery and is proudly - most days - symptom free. She lives from a careful protocol of following clinical advice, reading research, and using her own anecdotal path to back care to work closely with athletes and all movers to manage or avoid their own debilitating back stories.
