Pose Lab: Mastering Supported Shoulderstand

Date: 01/08/2023
Time: 01:00 PM
– 03:30 PM
Location: Tune Yoga Room: Brighton, NY

(Variations or Full; Beginner-Friendly or Refining; You’ve Got This and Gonna Love It).

Limited to very small group, in person.

Sarvangasana (shoulder stand) is dubbed – rightly so – “the queen” of all yoga poses. Most top yoga professionals and wise health care practitioners tend to believe that the INVERSION pose family is likely the most effective of all. The benefits are undeniable, as is the sense of power and accomplishment performing the full supported pose or mastering a modification / variation that still exceeds your expectations.

Be clear – this is not child’s play. This is serious stuff. The cervical spine (neck) is not designed to support our full body weight so doing this pose incorrectly is risking serious, even long term, injury. Learning to perform for the first time, or refining it, this pose must be done under professional and seasoned yoga instructor supervision.

That’s where this small focused workshop comes in! I’ve performed this pose myself for decades and have taught it successfully in group and private sessions for over a decade. So let me get you into it safely, securely and with so much satisfaction!

We will do a strategically designed warm-up to prep the body and mind for this great pose – and will use the tried and true pose variations/modifications as we ‘scaffold’ our way to the final pose. You may choose to stop at a variation and work on that as others progress on. It will be a safe and supportive environment to explore your limits.

Pose benefits include:

  • Calms the brain and helps relieve stress and mild depression
  • Stimulates the thyroid, prostate glands and abdominal organs
  • Improves digestion
  • Reduces fatigue and alleviates insomnia
  • Stretches the shoulders and neck
  • Tones the legs and buttocks
  • Helps relieve the symptoms of menopause

Pose contraindications / cautions are:

  • neck injury
  • diarrhea
  • headache
  • high blood pressure (untreated)
  • glaucoma
  • detached retina
  • menstruation
  • pregnancy: if you’ve done the pose prior, continue, but don’t learn it during pregnancy
  • considered an intermediate to advanced pose
